The Causes of Eyebrow Hair Loss
by April Maguire

Although losing the hair atop your head can certainly be traumatic, most of us have come to terms with the fact that, at some point in our lives, our hair will start to thin and fall out. What can be even harder for people to come to terms with, however, is losing their eyebrow hair. According to beauty experts, the loss of eyebrow hair can be especially troubling for women, and rightly so. Your eyebrows are a crucial framing element to your face, and without them your entire look can change dramatically. But what causes eyebrow hair to thin and fall out? Check out the list below to see some of the most common culprits.
Plucking
Over-plucking is most women's go-to explanation for why their eyebrow hair is starting to thin, and there is some validity to that theory. Repeatedly plucking your eyebrows can damage the follicles and prevent them from growing new hairs. But there are other culprits that are just as likely.
Illness
Some eyebrow loss is attributable to a wide range of illnesses or internal changes within your body. For example, hormonal changes can cause hair loss, even in the eyebrow area. And even if hair loss isn't a side effect of a disease that you're suffering from, it can be a side effect of whatever medication you might be using to treat it.
Stress
Stress isn't good for your body in general, but it can wreak havoc on your hair. Acute stress attacks or ongoing bouts of anxiety can cause a condition known as telogen effluvium, wherein your body stops producing new hair. This condition can affect your eyebrows, as well as the hair on your head.
Skin Conditions
There are a number of skin conditions that can contribute to hair loss, including eczema or psoriasis. While these conditions don't directly cause hair to fall out, they do cause itchiness and irritation, and all of the subsequent scratching that you do could be damaging your eyebrow follicles.
General Hair Loss
The loss of eyebrow hair can be a part of a more generalized hair loss everywhere on your body. One such condition that can cause this kind of hair loss is, alopecia areata, which is an autoimmune disorder wherein your body's own immune system begins attacking follicles and destroying hair cells.
If you're experiencing hair loss in the eyebrow area, then you shouldn't just assume that it's the result of one cause or another. Do some legwork to determine if something in your lifestyle, diet or medication routine could be causing it. Once you know what the cause is, then you can work towards getting the appropriate treatment.
