Kids growing up in the pre-World War II era were regularly dosed with foul-tasting castor oil for its health benefits. That use has fallen out of fashion, but now castor oil is undergoing a revival for supposed ability to protect and regrow hair. The question is: Does it work? The fact is that there is no scientific evidence to buttress these claims. On the other hand, there’s no harm to putting castor oil on your head if you want to see if it will work.
What Castor Oil Can Do
Even if castor oil can’t grow hair, that doesn’t mean there are no pluses to using it on your scalp. It has conditioning properties, so using it makes hair more flexible and less stiff. Castor oil also has natural anti-microbial properties, so it can combat any fungus or harmful bacteria on the scalp that may damage hair. It’s possible that ability is what make some people think castor oil has actually made their hair grow, when it really got rid of inflammation that was harming scalp health. Castor oil can help eradicate dandruff and also aids hair damaged by harsh dyes and chemicals. When hair looks better, people make think it has grown when that’s not the case.
Using Castor Oil
If you decide to use castor oil for its legitimate benefits, keep in mind it is a very sticky substance. For best results, mix castor oil, preferably cold-pressed and unrefined, with another oil such as argan or jojoba for easier application. Use three parts castor oil to one part of another oil. You only need to place a few drops on your head once or twice weekly. Dampen your hair before application, but don’t apply castor oil to a truly wet head. Leave it on your hair overnight, or at least for several hours. Put a towel around your head or wear a shower cap so you won’t get the oil on everything with which your head comes into contact. Removing castor oil is tricky. If you use just a few drop, most of the oil is absorbed into the scalp and removal isn’t an issue. Use too much, and you’ll need a good shampoo to get rid of it. Mild shampoos may not remove all of the oil from your head. You can also try putting conditioner on your hair before removing the castor oil, then getting into the shower and shampooing it all off.
