Can Overdyeing Lead to Hair Loss?

by April Maguire

It seems that even Hollywood's most glamorous actresses aren't immune from the ravages of hair loss. According to a recent article in Britain's "Mirror," Keira Knightley has been suffering from thinning hair and patches of baldness for more than five years. Reportedly, the cause of this hair loss stems from repeatedly dyeing her hair for various film roles, such as "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Atonement" and "Pride & Prejudice."

If this type of hair loss sounds familiar, then it should. Jennifer Lawrence made headlines a few years ago when she suffered a similar ordeal. After dying her hair for the "Hunger Games" trilogy and "Silver Linings Playbook," the Oscar-winning actress said that her hair was fried, lifeless and brittle. Similarly, "Mad Men's" January Jones had her own brush with hair loss after dyeing her hair for various film and television roles.

So do all of these celebrity horror stories mean that it's time to stop dyeing? Not necessarily, but you definitely want to be careful about how you do it.

The Dos and Don'ts of Dyeing

Whether you're looking to cover up a little grey or just change your natural hair color, dyeing has a number of benefits. But there are some rules of the road that you need to follow if you're going to color your hair.

First of all, it's important to understand how hair dye can lead to baldness. A lot of people believe that this kind of hair loss occurs because the dye damages the hair follicles, but that's not true. Overdyeing actually impacts the hair strands themselves, removing vital proteins and causing the shafts to weaken. Once the hair strands have been damaged, they can become extremely brittle, leading to thinning and loss.

So what is the best way to dye your hair? For starters, you need to know how a given dye is going to affect your body, so always perform an allergy test before coloring your entire head. If you're naturally irritated by a chemical in the dye, then it can have disastrous results on your hair.

Also, experts advise not to go from one hair color to the next over and over again. Give your hair time to relax between dyeings by going natural for a little while.

But what if you love to experiment with different hair colors? Well, the simple and easy solution is to try wigs. Having wigs in different shades and cuts can allow you to try out different looks without exposing your hair to damaging chemicals. Even Miss Knightley herself is rumored to be fond of using wigs to make up for her hair loss. And if it's good enough for Keira Knightley, then it should be good enough for all of us.
