From Brussels Sprouts to Yogurt: How to Halt Hair Loss
by April Maguire

While not uncommon, female hair loss is a devastating condition with the potential to affect both your appearance and self-esteem. While many cases of hair loss are due to medical conditions like alopecia, nutrition can also have a profound effect on hair thickness and texture. According to a recent study from the Laboratoires Innéov in France, supplementing one’s diet with fatty acids may result in an overall improvement to both hair health and appearance.
What Are Essential Fatty Acids?
Essential fatty acids are nutrients that the body needs to perform daily functions. From reducing inflammation to improving brain function, regulating the metabolism to promoting good bone health, fatty acids clearly have a profound effect on the body. However, a new study shows that these vital nutrients can also affect the appearance of your hair.
Because they stimulate blood circulation, Omega-3 fatty acids can impact new growth among hair follicles. Further, a fatty acid deficiency may lead to unpleasant side effects like dry scalp, flaky skin and dandruff, all of which can increase rates of hair loss. Since the body can’t create fatty acids on its own, people may need to adjust their diets to ensure they get enough of this valuable nutrient. Fish, eggs, yogurt and Brussels sprouts all contain a significant amount of Omegy-3 fatty acids.
Understanding the Study
Conducted by Caroline Le Floc'h, the recent French study evaluated the effect a six-month course of fatty acid supplements had on patients’ hair loss. Researchers assessed changes in hair density among 120 healthy female patients using a series of photographs. After treatment, those women taking fatty acid supplements experienced a reduction in telogen hair percentage, or the period when hair is in its resting phase, as compared to the control group. Similarly, they saw an increase in nonvellus anagen hair and the trichometer index.
Hope for Hair Loss Sufferers
While the degree of improvement in the study was measured largely by subjects’ perceptions, most of the participants were very happy with their results. In fact, patients reported an 89.9 percent reduction in hair loss as well as an 85.1 percent boost in hair density.
If you’re experiencing sudden hair loss, it’s important that you don’t suffer in silence. Talk to your doctor to see if fatty acids could help improve the thickness and texture of your hair. In many cases, female hair loss is in fact reversible.
