The Best Diet for Healthy Hair
by Jane Meggitt

If you’re suffering from hair loss, the right diet can make a difference in whether or not you continue to lose locks. The overall quality of your hair correlates significantly with the quality of your diet.
While you can take vitamin supplements designed to enhance hair, eating a diet rich in the appropriate foods is the best way to go.
Vitamin C
Antioxidant vitamin C plays a major role in keeping our bodies healthy and bolstering our immune systems. It’s also vital for shiny, healthy hair. A lack of this crucial nutrient leads to breakage and dullness. Vitamin C is essential for collagen development in the body, and hair requires this connective tissue to grow properly and stay strong. Of course, you know that citrus fruits are chock-full of vitamin C, but they are far from the only source. Only foods containing lots of vitamin C include:
- bell peppers
- broccoli
- leafy greens
- nectarines
- papayas
- peas
- pears
- strawberries
- tomatoes
B Vitamins
The B vitamin family contains biotin, also known as B-7. It’s the most common ingredient in supplements designed for hair and nail strength, and it is featured in many shampoos and other hair care products. A biotin deficiency results in hair loss, so you want to ensure you’re consuming sufficient quantities if too much loose hair appears in your sink or shower. If you like avocados or guacamole, you’re in luck, because they are chock full of biotin. Other foods containing B vitamins for hair strength include:
- almonds
- low fat cheese
- eggs
- fish
- Greek yogurt
- peanut butter
Plenty of Protein
Your hair consists of protein, and a diet low in protein can soon result in dull, lifeless hair. At least 25 percent of your daily diet should include protein. Good source of protein include:
- chicken
- dairy products
- eggs
- fish
- nuts
- turkey
Iron Deficiency
An iron deficiency can lead to hair loss. You might try eating iron-rich foods such as red meats, pork and ham, beans, clams, oysters and other shellfish. Do not take an iron supplement without your doctor’s recommendation, as excess iron can cause harm.
If you’re consuming a hair-healthy diet and still dealing with hair loss, contact a medical provider specializing in hair loss for consultation and testing. Various physical and emotional conditions – including stress – can lead to balding.
