Basil Beats Baldness and Bedhead

by Angela Santoriello

Most often associated with Italian cooking, basil boasts many other qualities rather than just spicing up Sunday gravy.

Noting that basil is used in long-established cultural remedies, LIVESTRONG reports that “the essential oils contain the same compounds as the leaves in a convenient form and have been touted to have a wide variety of benefits.”

Cosmetics design-europe.com recently reported that Mibelle Biochemistry — a Switzerland-based company that creates cosmetic and hair products from natural compounds — futher revealed that basil extract reduces hair loss. The company’s head of research Dr. Daniel Schmid recently spoke about RootBioTec HO, a formula containing basil. “The RootBioTec HO is designed for hair oils, serums and conditioners as it stimulates hair papilla cells and reduces hair loss,” Schmid told the website.

Graduating with his PhD from the Institute of Biochemistry at the University of Zürich, Schmid studied probiotic bacteria at Nestlé in Vers-chez-les-Blanc’s research center before moving on to create skincare ingredients. In the last 15 years, Schmid has made a name for himself with his notable ingredients and products at Mibelle Biochemistry. But it is not only Schmid who boasts basil power. Comparing basil extract and peppermint oil, LIVESTRONG notes that “both natural remedies have been touted to encourage hair growth and slow hair loss.”

Some of those benefits are the herb’s anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal properties, as basil can increase blood circulation which in turn helps stimulate hair growth. The healing oil is reported to seal thinning hair follicles as well as promote growth when applied directly to the scalp daily on dry or wet hair, or by mixing with shampoo and conditioner.

LA Healthy Living reports that other “herbal tinctures and healing essential oils are especially beneficial for the scalp and hair.” Juniper, lavender, rosemary, peppermint, and basil are five of the most essential hair growth oils. “Basil essential oil possesses stimulant properties and can be applied topically to increase blood flow. The increased blood flow helps hair grow,” says LA Healthy Living. “Basil oil can be mixed with other essential oils, such as lavender or rosemary to stimulate new hair growth.”

Lifestyle website Stylish Walks says that basil strengthens the hair shaft, helping to combat brittle strands. “A paste of basil leaves added to your hair oil controls hair loss, itchiness and improves circulation,” adds Stylish Walks. So next time you’re in the spice aisle contemplating ways to set your secret sauce apart from others, consider picking up basil to add flavor to the pot and to the hair on your head.
