Avoid Hair Loss by Changing Your Habits
by Jane Meggitt
Nobody wants to lose their hair, but it’s a fact of life for millions of people, male and female. If you have a genetic propensity for male or female pattern baldness, there’s not much you do to prevent eventual hair loss, but you can delay it by switching to hair healthy habits. If there is no genetic predisposition to hair loss in your family, these same habits can drive hair thinning and balding.
Tight Hairstyles
Tight ponytails, buns and weaves all have one thing in common – they aren’t good for your scalp and can cause your hair to fall out. Any hairstyle causing constant tension on the roots is a recipe for long-term hair disaster. That’s especially true if you tie your hair up tightly after washing. Wet, strained hair is quite vulnerable to breakage.
Signs that tight hairstyles are resulting in hair loss include widening of the part. If your part is expanding for no obvious reason – and you regularly wear a tension-producing hairstyle – it’s likely the style is causing the problem. Pay a visit to your hairdresser and discuss ways to disguise hair loss and switch to a looser style.
Eat Right
Yes, diet affects your locks – especially consuming the wrong type of foods. If you eat a primarily vegan or vegetarian diet, your hair may suffer. That’s because hair consists of protein, and it flourishes when there is plenty of protein in the diet. People who do not consume animal products often have an issue with obtaining enough protein for general health, and if the body lacks sufficient protein, non-essentials like hair are the first to lose their meager protein sources. For best results, include eggs, fish and meat in your diet. If that’s not an option, make sure you eat lots of green, leafy veggies, such as kale. Iron supplements, as well as vitamin B12, can help prevent hair loss, but it’s important to speak with a doctor and ensure you are receiving enough protein in your diet.
The Wrong Shampoo
Shampoos containing certain chemicals can harm your hair and speed up hair loss. Look for shampoos containing natural ingredients, and avoid those containing heavy fragrances, as well as substances such as proplyene glycol, polyethylene glycol and isopropyl alcohol. These are industrial solvents, and you don’t want them on your head. They make shampoo lather up well, but that doesn’t mean a shampoo is good or effective.
