ARTAS Hair Restoration System Receives FDA Approval
It looks like the latest innovation in hair restoration just got a little more interesting: it's a robot. But don't write it off as a scam-- it just got approved by the FDA. The ARTAS™ System combines a computer, imaging technology, a robotic arm, and other technologically advanced devices designed to treat hair loss. Specifically, it aids in the follicular unit extraction (FUE) aspect of hair transplants.

The ARTAS System, manufactured by Restoration Robotics, works by extracting active hair follicles from the back and sides of the heads. This procedure, called FUE, is pretty routine in the world of hair loss treatments-- since hair grows normally in these areas, some of the follicles can be removed and placed on areas of the head that don't grow hair. Since there are so many hair follicles per square inch, these extractions aren't very noticeable. The ARTAS System is different because it's able to electronically identify and extract the follicles using a small dermal punch. The robotic arm moves over the patients scalp, punching out active follicles. After they've been removed from the scalp, they're then manually transplanted to the head by a hair transplant specialist. The ARTAS System is quick and efficient, with the ability to remove between 750 and 1,000 hair follicles per hour.
But since the ARTAS System is controlled by a computer, it doesn't have quite the color visibility of a human. The ARTAS System can only treat men with black or brown hair. Moreover, it's only approved for men with androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss). So if you're a man that suffers from a less common form of hair loss like telogen effluvium (TE), you're not a good candidate for the Artas System.
