Three Common Contributors to Hair Loss and Remedies to Get it Back
by April Maguire

In general, both men and women start to see a noticeable amount of hair thinning and baldness by the time they reach 50, and while the majority of this hair loss is completely natural, due to genetics, there are a number of factors and behaviors that could be exacerbating it. If you’ve noticed more hair in your sink or stuck in your brush, then check out the list below to see if you’re engaging in practices that are contributing to your hair loss.
Stress
Our bodies don’t react well to stress, and that is particularly true for our hair. High levels of stress can cause a hormone imbalance in our systems. With your hormones out of whack, your hair follicles may stop going through their normal phases of shedding and regrowth. In fact, a high level of stress for an extended period of time can cause follicles to shut down, leading to more shedding than growth and resulting in overall hair loss.
Vitamin Deficiency
As with any other part of your body, your hair needs to get proper nutrition in order to remain healthy and strong. Often, hair loss is attributable to a deficiency in key vitamins that are needed for hair growth, such as iron, zinc and vitamin D. A significant lack of any of these vitamins could cause you to lose more hair than normal.
Being Too Hard on Your Hair
Believe it or not, putting your hair through undue stress can cause it to fall out. If you’re in the habit of wearing your hair in a tight ponytail or weighing it down with extensions, then you could be putting enough stress on the follicles to damage them. Additionally, using abrasive dyes and overheating your hair when styling it can also stress the follicles enough that they stop regrowing hair.
Possible Remedies
If you’ve noticed that you’re losing more hair than usual, then see if any of the above contributors could apply to you. Often, simple adjustments in your hair care routine and diet can be enough to curb hair loss. When these adjustments aren’t enough, many men and women turn to other remedies. One of the most popular solutions to hair loss is buying an over-the-counter topical cream, such as Rogaine. While these creams can be effective for some people, others don’t notice any change in their rate of hair loss. For a more dramatic remedy, many people choose to undergo follicle transplantation.
For the most part, hair loss is a natural part of growing older. But if you’re concerned with the amount of hair you’re losing, then you should consult with your doctor and see what remedies could work best for you.
