Three Celebs Who Battled Post-Pregnancy Hair Loss

by Angela Santoriello

While losing hair after giving birth is natural and well worth it, it is nonetheless an issue that comes at a time when many women are already suffering from low self-esteem after acting as an incubator for nine months.

With the extra weight and often blemished skin that comes with carrying a baby, English actress Jacqueline Jossa also lost a significant amount of hair after having her child. Giving birth in February 2015 to her daughter Ella, the EastEnders star took to social media, empathizing with other new moms.

Jossa posted a photo of her thinning hairline via Instagram, saying “'For all the new baby mummy's that might be losing some hair after birth, I'm right here with you, I think it's starting to slowly grow back.” She continued by telling other mothers to both embrace and enjoy “being with our beautiful little cuties.” Jossa’s honesty gained notable attention, with 16,000 likes and comments attached to the photo.

While one new mom shared her hair is still growing in 19 months after giving birth, another shared she was experiencing most of her hair loss six months after delivery. While the English actress used the internet to speak on the issue, American actress Kate Hudson spoke of the same in Redbook magazine, saying with her first born she was blessed with no blemishes or hair loss. Unfortunately, “with my second child, I got acne, all my hair fell out after he was born, and I definitely had to work out to drop the weight,” said Hudson. “No pregnancy is easy to bounce back from.”

With her pregnancy out and open for the whole word to see (just the way she likes it!), Kim Kardashian-West also shared her hair loss after childbirth, reports Hollywood Life, speaking with several professionals on pregnancy and thinning hair.

New York City’s Pierre Michel Salon stylist Jerome Lordet says “Kim is also known for having extensions, which can pull the hair at the root, and this can make the thinning hair worse.” Promoting RepHair by Pierre Michel, Lordet says the scalp treatment is fabulous for post-pregnancy hair loss, as does JF Lazartigue at-home products and salon treatments.

“A great product for extreme hair loss and thinning is Biotin—a lot of stylists recommend this to their clients post-pregnancy. Finally, give hair extensions a rest—they will only add to the damaged roots and balding spots,” said Lordet.

Dr. Ryan Welter, chief medical surgeon with the New England for Hair Restoration, says “Kim’s hair loss seems to be focal, which is more consistent with the trauma of using extensions, or possibly from the disease state of alopecia areata. It is possible that her recent pregnancy weakened her hair making her more susceptible.”

Celebrity wig expert Flora Shepelsky also commented on the star’s thinning hairline after giving birth to daughter North. “It is very common for women to have partially thinning hair after childbirth and significant weight loss, two situations that Kim has just experienced,” she notes. Shepelsky says hormones and hair loss after pregnancy are natural, but other factors such as “poor nutrition, stress, genetic hair loss, thyroid condition and/or certain medications” can also be culprits.
