Seven Tips for Preventing Female Hair Loss
by Jane Meggitt

Women don’t go bald the way men do, but they still lose hair as they age. Thinning hair results in bald patches and visible hair loss near the part and the crown. It’s never too early to reduce the odds of hair loss by changing the way you wear and treat your crowning glory.
No Tight Hairstyles
Constant tension on your hair may result in traction alopecia. That’s the technical term for hair loss caused by strain. Styles to avoid include:
- Cornrows
- Tight braids
- Tight ponytails
Avoid Heat on Your Hair
Tools that use heat are hard on your hair. If your hair is thin enough that it dries naturally relatively quickly, skip the dryer altogether. Minimize the use of curling irons and other heat devices, and never leave them on a section of your hair for more than a few seconds. Use sprays to protect your hair from heat with styling devices.
Just Say No to Chemicals
Dying, straightening and other forms of chemical processing eventually promote hair loss. Over time, chemicals weaken the hair shaft and thinning occurs. If you don’t like your natural color, choose dyes that don’t contain:
- Coal tar
- Ammonia
- Peroxide
- Benzene
- Propylene glycol
- Lead acetate
Henna is a natural dye, although application is messy.
Use Products Designed for Thinning Hair
Cosmetic companies are well aware that female hair loss is a growing problem – no pun intended – and have created shampoos and conditioners specifically for this issue. Try shampoos containing oils and nutrients to feed hair and medications that kill fungi contributing to hair loss.
Minoxidil
If your hair loss is serious, use products containing Minoxidil on your hair. This over-the-counter medication stimulates the follicles, and with regular use you may notice your hair growing back in within several months.
Massage Your Scalp
Make scalp massage a part of your hair care routine. Simply give your head a good, gentle massage with your fingertips, either while conditioner is still in your hair or post-rinsing. Regular massage stimulates hair growth. Incorporate the use of essential oils such as rosemary or lavender into your massage by adding a few drops to your scalp. These oils can regenerate your scalp and aid in hair growth.
A Healthy Diet
You are what you eat, and that’s reflected in your hair. Consume a healthy diet including leafy greens, fruits and vegetables, and stay away from junk food. Consider taking supplements containing biotin and other nutrients for healthy hair.
Even if you aren’t currently suffering from hair loss, be proactive and steer clear of practices that result in balding down the road.
