New Options Available for Women Suffering From Hair Loss
by April Maguire

Typically, people perceive hair loss as a problem that only affects men. According to some estimates, however, almost 40% of those who experience a thinning or loss of hair are actually women. In the past, women have had relatively few options for treating their hair loss, but recently, several new treatment methods have appeared on the market, offering hope to the millions of women who are losing their hair.
Laser Hair Therapy
When women think of lasers, they ordinarily think of hair removal, but lasers can actually help to regrow hair as well. According to scientific studies, when lasers are set at a lower intensity, the light is absorbed into damaged hair cells, causing them to reactivate and promoting the growth of new hair.
Currently, there are several different types of laser helmets and combs on the market that you can use within the privacy of your own home. If you’re going to buy one of these products, however, just make sure that the one you choose is approved by the FDA.
Topical Solution
In the past, topical solutions like Rogaine were designed for men, but these types of products are increasingly being formulated for women. When it comes to topical solutions for hair growth, the key ingredient to look for is minoxidil, which is a compound that helps to regrow hair. Nowadays, numerous over-the-counter products are available, such as topical creams, shampoos, and mousses, which use a 5% solution of minoxidil in order to promote hair regrowth in women.
Stimulating Stem Cells
One of the newer hair loss therapies to emerge in the last few years is called platelet-rich plasma, or simply PRP. During a PRP treatment, a doctor draws blood from the patient, spins it through a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and then injects the blood into the patient’s scalp. Scientifically, this technique has been proven to reactive stem cells within the scalp and regenerate the blood vessels which feed the hair follicles.
While this treatment may be effective, it comes with a hefty price tag. On average, a single PRP treatment costs more than $1,000, and more than one treatment is usually needed to start seeing real results.
For members of either sex, hair loss can be an embarrassing problem. Fortunately though, treatments such as these are becoming more effective and more widely available, meaning that, in the near future, hair loss could become a thing of the past.
