Men’s Hair Loss: Common Causes and Solutions
by Matthew Dello Russo

Hair loss is an extremely common problem that plagues both men and women every day. In fact, over 50% of men over 50 experience some form of male pattern baldness, though the severity may vary based on a number of factors.
There are ways to battle thinning hair or stop the cycle of hair loss. Read on below to uncover what might me causing your hair loss- and what you can do to stop it.
Stop the Knot
Stress or tension on the roots of your hair can cause permanent, irreversible damage to your follicles and increase your risk of hair loss. This phenomenon is referred to as Traction Alopecia, and is generally caused by excessively tight pony tails, over-brushing, or extensions without breaks.
Try implementing some styles that put less tension on your roots. Heck, even letting those lovely locks flow freely will help reduce the amount of hair loss from traction alopecia. Too much pressure on hair follicles can actually worsen hair loss, especially for individuals with naturally thin hair.
I bet you’re thinking, “Men don’t wear pony tails! And they certainly don’t get extensions!” Guess again, pal; the man bun is very real, and guys are taking on more adventurous style trends every day.
The Right Routine
Condition, condition, condition! While it’s easy to skip the conditioner when taking a quick shower, don’t do it often; over time, the lack of hydration will really damage your hair and cause it to thin drastically. Dehydrated hair follicles are bad news, and can lead to smaller, finer hair strands.
Lightweight, nutrient packed conditions, especially those containing panthenol and glycerin, keep fragile hair strong and pliable and combat hair loss.
Chill Out, Man
We get it. Working 60 hours a week, trying to balance out life at home with everything else going on – it can get hectic. But the stress you carry around may be leading to hair loss, and that’s not something you want!
Hair loss as a result of emotional stress, shock, or trauma to your mind or body is often referred to as Telogen Effluvium. Although daily hair loss is normal and expected in both men and women, Telogen Effluvium results in excessive hair loss that actually disrupts the normal growth and rest period of your hair follicles.
Don’t worry; this type of hair loss is temporary, and actually begins to dissipate as stress levels drop. In the meantime, try some dietary changes to protect your hair and bolster your scalp!
Haircare Diet
One of the best things you can do for your hair: chow down! Your hair, just like your body, needs tons of nutrients to stay happy and healthy; don’t skimp on the fruits and veggies if you want to create a diet that will fortify your mane.
A well rounded diet full of essential fatty acids, proteins, vitamins and minerals will do wonders to your scalp and help strengthen your strands. Zinc, Iron, and Selenium contribute to healthy hair growth, and can actually stop hair from thinning or falling out.
