How To: Prevent Thinning Hair

by Matthew Dello Russo

At any given time, between 80 and 90 percent of the hair follicles on your head are actively growing. The remaining 10-20 percent are resting and recovering, ensuring that dead hair and skin is purged by the body as scalp cells regenerate naturally. Extreme emotional or physical trauma often disrupts this cycle, causing hair to fall out in clumps when styled, brushed, or washed. Don’t worry though – this type of hair loss is temporary, and hair loss decreases with stress levels.

If your hair has started to thin - or if you are worried that it might - it could be time to make some changes to your routine to prevent breakage and hair loss. Follow our guide to toughen up those skinny strands and bolster your haircare regimen.

Loosen Up

Constant stress and tension on your hair can permanently damage your hair follicles and increase your risk of hair loss. Traction alopecia, the medical term for tension-induced hair loss, is generally caused by putting it into tight ponytails, excessively blow-drying it straight with a brush, or wearing extensions without giving you hair a break every few months.

Instead, choose looser styles or let your hair flow freely as often as you can. Opt for brushless blow dryers before styling, and use your fingers to work through stubborn hair. Too much pressure on hair follicles can actually worsen hair loss, especially for individuals with naturally thin hair.

Don’t Skip the Conditioner

While it may be tempting to skip rinse-out conditioners, don’t do it; over time, lack of hydration causes hair to dry and damaged, causing the actual diameter of each strand to become smaller. Avoid ultra-softening conditioners that are formulated for extremely damaged hair – they are too heavy and can actually make the problem worse.

Try a conditioner that is super lightweight, especially those containing panthenol and glycerin. These ingredients keep fragile hair strong and pliable.

Chill Out

Thin or fine hair breaks easily under high heat, so try to use hot styling tools as minimally as possible. If you absolutely need to use a curling iron, flat iron, or blow-dryer, use a protective spray on your hair to prevent additional breakage and damage.

Eat Healthy for your Hair

Your hair needs just fuel just as badly as your body does! Make sure your diet is well rounded and full of essential fatty acids, proteins, vitamins and minerals to strengthen your strands. Zinc, iron, and selenium contribute to healthy hair growth, and can actually stop hair from thinning.

Be patient – you won’t see results from a dietary change after just one week. Your body needs time to adjust and deliver the nutrients to your scalp.
