Healthier Hair Doesn't Have to Bust the Wallet: Product Round Up

When Business Insider reports a product prevails, you know it must be good.
In a May 2015 report, the magazine reviewed how you could get more bang for your buck with certain hair products. Reporting that 95 percent of male pattern baldness is genetic, “hair loss and thinning hair might also stem from how you treat your strands, and maybe more importantly, your scalp.” Knowing that hair loss can be controlled with certain chemically treated products sheds a new light on where to look for help when hair is thinning.
The Philip Kingsley Stimulating Scalp Mask, Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Root and Ojon Damage Reverse Thickening Scalp Treatment are three of the best scalp treatments under $35, claims Business Insider. “Hair grows its best from a healthy scalp that is free from flakes, excessive yeasts, and bacteria,” says Anabel Kingsley, scalp expert with the Philip Kingsley product brand, adding that ingredients to look for are stimulants, exfoliants and anti-androgens.
Pre-shampoo conditioners are key in keeping hair in place with Baxter of California Daily Protein Shampoo, Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Pre-Shampoo Treatment and Redken Cerafill Retaliate Shampoo for Advanced Thinning Hair all top buys for brittle hair that breaks, inevitably causing full scalp thinning. Though the Kingsley brand is priced at almost $50, the other two brands can be snagged for under $20.
“If your hair is dry, processed, or below shoulder length, a weekly pre-shampoo conditioning treatment will help restore strength and bounce,” says Business Insider. At under $21, Kiehl’s Ultimate Thickening Shampoo, Briogeo Blossom & Bloom Ginseng + Biotin Volumizer and Alterna Caviar Anti Aging Bodybuilding Volume Shampoo are all excellent cleansing agents that strengthen hair while washing it.
"Those with thinning hair have fewer or finer hairs, meaning that there is less surface area for sebum (oil) to be distributed over. As a result, roots tend to get greasy faster, creating limpness,” explains Kingsley. “Cleanse regularly with a body building shampoo to give hair added volume and remove excess oils, grease, and dirt.”
TOPPIK Men’s Hair Regrowth Treatment and Peter Thomas Roth Hair to Die for Treatment, both under $35, are also great products that deal with hair loss issues related to health and diet. “There are three main causes of thinning hair we encounter in our clinics: breakage, sensitivity to normal levels of circulating hormones, and dietary deficiencies—often a combination of these are present," says Kingsley, suggesting each cause should be addressed with separate products.

“Forming the main bulk of each strand, amino acids (proteins) are the building blocks for hair growth,” Kingsley explains. “However, as hair is non-essential tissue it will be the last to receive any you intake through your diet, and the first to suffer from a deficiency.
