Head Covering Options for Women Experiencing Hair Loss

by April Maguire

Traditionally, people think of hair loss as a problem that only men face, but according to recent numbers, more than 40% of women over the age of 50 have noticeable signs of hair loss. And while a little thinning or outright baldness may be socially acceptable for men, the same often isn’t true for their female counterparts, leaving many women suffering from hair loss scrambling for ways to cover their heads.

Most Common Hair Loss Causes

For women, one of the most common causes of baldness is androgenetic alopecia. This type of baldness occurs naturally, often as a result of genetics, and happens when hair follicles shrink over time and eventually stop producing new hairs altogether. But it isn’t just genetics that causes hair loss in women. Sadly, a number of women also lose their hair as a result of medical conditions or as side effects from medical treatments, such as chemotherapy.

Head Covering Options

When it comes to hiding their hair loss in public, a lot of women go for the cheap and easy option of simply wearing a hat. With a seemingly endless variety of styles available, this option is certainly one of the most versatile, and with only a minimal amount of effort you could find a hat for virtually any occasion.

Unfortunately though, hats aren’t always appropriate, and they may be unsuitable for women who have lost a significant amount of hair. In these instances, a lot of women will turn to wigs instead. Currently, you can purchase numerous types of customizable wigs, but high quality, natural-looking wigs made out of real hair come at a steep price. On average, these wigs can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000, making them too pricey for a lot of women.

Increasingly, a large percentage of women are using their hair loss as an opportunity to try out new types of fashion accessories, such as headscarves, elaborate bows and even turbans. In fact, retailers around the world, like Enola Wade in England, who specialize in stylish head coverings, have reported that a high percentage of their clientele consists of women looking to hide their hair loss. And non-traditional head coverings such as these can sometimes be a much more discrete way of hiding a very common problem.

For women, hair loss can be embarrassing, and trying to find ways to cover up thinning hair or baldness can cause even more stress. But it can be helpful to look at the problem as a chance to explore new fashions. With a little creativity, no one will suspect your stylish new head covering is hiding anything at all.
