Four Nutritional Tips to Give you Better Hair and Nails

Are you dissatisfied with the look and feel of your hair or nails? If so, then your diet may be to blame. While our bodies need good overall nutrition in order to function properly, certain parts of the body require certain vitamins and nutrients to remain healthy and strong. Depriving your hair and nails of the basic elements that they need to thrive can hinder their growth and lead to them becoming brittle and dull. If you've noticed that your hair or nails are looking a little lackluster these days, then here are four vitamins and minerals that you need to be including in your diet.
Zinc
Zinc is one of the fundamental building blocks of both hair and nails. Unfortunately, it's also a vitamin that is easily depleted inside of the body, so you need to keep a steady stream of it in your diet. In order to give your hair and nails the zinc that they need, make sure you eat plenty of zinc-rich foods, such as cashews, cheese, poultry and dark chocolate.
Carotenoids
An organic compound found in plants, carotenoids are necessary to maintain the health of your nail beds and hair follicles. If these body parts start to deteriorate, then the nails and hair that grow out of them will be brittle and weak, breaking easily. In order to get the requisite amount of carotenoids into your system, make sure to include carrots, kale, and sweet potatoes in your diet.
Biotin
If you're concerned at all about the growth of your hair and nails, then you've probably heard of biotin before. Biotin is a part of the B vitamin series, and it improves the strength of both hair and nails, allowing them to grow longer without breaking. In order to get biotin naturally from your diet, have oatmeal or eggs for breakfast or snack on walnuts or almonds throughout the day.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Most people think that they need to cut as much fat out of their diets as possible, but omega-3 fatty acids actually serve a number of important functions in the body. When it comes to hair and nails, omega-3s provide essential nourishment, helping to keep them properly hydrated and flexible. If you need to get more omega-3 fatty acids into your diet, make sure that you eat plenty of fish, such as salmon or tuna, dairy products, and eggs.
In order to get the proper nutrients, many people use vitamin supplements. Unfortunately, the jury is still out on whether or not getting vitamins and minerals from supplements is as effective as getting them from food. To be on the safe side, you should simply make adjustments to your diet, making sure to include foods that will give your hair and nails the nutrition that they need.
