5 Common Causes of Female Hair Loss
by April Maguire

If a guy starts go a little thin up top, it's usually no big deal. After all, it's almost expected, right? But if a woman starts to lose her hair, it can lead to a full-blown panic, complete with plenty of stress, anger and frustration. Unfortunately, this problem is incredibly common, as nearly 40% of hair loss sufferers are women. All of this thinning and loss can stem from a number of different causes, and here are five of the most common.
Stress
You how you get so stressed that sometimes you feel like pulling out your hair? Well, as it turns out, that's your body's natural reaction to stress as well. Increased anxiety and tension can throw off the hormones in your body, interrupting your hair growth cycle and causing more shedding than growth. So take time every day to relax and destress.
Excessive Styling
Naturally, you want your hair to look great, but not at the expense of...well, your hair. Excessive dyeing, blow-drying and using chemical-laden products can all lead to hair loss. Additionally, regularly wearing your hair in styles that are too tight, such as a taut ponytail or cornrows, can damage your follicles and stop new hairs from growing.
Improper Diet
Your body needs proper nutrition in order to stay healthy and strong, and that includes your hair. If you want to give your follicles the fuel they need to thrive, then make sure your diet consists of plenty of protein-infused meats, iron-rich leafy greens and omega-3-laden fish. All of these vitamins and minerals are essential to maintain the health of your hair.
Health-Related Issues
Sometimes losing your hair is a side effect of a larger health issue. For example, hair loss is a common symptom of abnormal thyroid function. If you've noticed that you're losing your hair at an excessive rate and you can’t find another cause, then it may be time to schedule an appointment with your doctor.
Genetics
Heredity plays a major role in hair loss, and unfortunately there isn't anything you can do about it. If you are susceptible to androgenetic alopecia, which is the most common cause of hair loss for both women and men, then ultimately there may be no way to stave off the problem indefinitely. However, you can avoid practices, such as styling excessively or maintaining a poor diet, which will make the problem worse.
Nobody wants to lose their hair, and for women hair loss can be especially upsetting. Once you know the most common causes, however, you can better diagnose the source of your hair loss and take the necessary steps to correct it.
