Don't Panic! Despite These Signs, You Are NOT Going Bald

by Angela Santoriello

There’s a time to worry and a time to shake it off.

However, when it comes to hair loss, serious panic often sets in unnecessarily when either gender believes hair is falling out. Just the thought of going bald is enough to make one lose a few hairs. Preventing panic and consulting Cleveland Clinic is Dr. John Anthony, leading hair loss specialist and WebMD expert physician He contributes to an E! Style report revealing the reality between serious hair loss and normal seasonal shedding.

First, the loss of a 100 strands of hair daily is average. In a normal cycle, “each strand will reach the resting stage (telogen) at its own pace,” to then separate from a lack of blood supply and fall out. Anthony detailed there is no need to worry unless "your hair is dramatically shedding (150+ strands a day) or when there is a widening of the part on the scalp."

With hair growth occurring in separate cycles and some coming up as others fall out, the doctor said in that in the end, truly “thinning hair is an underlying symptom of pattern hair loss or alopecia." But before going overboard with warranted worry from thinning, one should find out why there is hair loss, explained Anthony, who said assessing one’s diet can usually rule out genetic causes.

“Sometimes, it takes a physical to decide if it’s pattern hair loss,” he said adding, “Some [hair-loss cases] are even reversible, due to metabolic deficiencies. Other times, younger [adults] who decide to be on a restrictive diet will see hair loss.”

But when it is not diet, hair loss is often still on a cellular level, with off balance hormones and genetics the usual culprits. While hormonal hair loss is not necessarily permanent, DNA induced hair loss is. Vain but true, many women can’t wait to see pictures of their beau’s father to foretell if their love interest will keep his hair. “Genetic pattern hair loss, where hair thins, is progressive and tends to get worse," said Anthony.

Lastly, styling is directly related to hair loss. Heated tools, messy products, and tugging strands into shape causes hair to fall out early during its growth cycle. “As far as using your curling iron every day, [that] is not going make all your hair fall out,” said Anthony, but an already thinning scalp or familial loss will cause breakage. However, "If you keep [damaging] the hair, it doesn't have a chance to get long.”

Tight braids, ponytails and even buns stress the roots and make hair more susceptible to damage. Anthony said that if need be, get rid of certain tools and take it easy on the scalp, swapping style for health.

Reports show that gender related hair loss varies with men and women who suffer from the condition. While an askmen.com report rates the top three reasons for male hair loss as pattern baldness, stress, and vitamin and mineral deficiency, HealthSite reports hairstyling, hormones, and anemia are the top three for females. So before you start to freak out over the extra hair in the sink, take note of the reasons why you shouldn’t worry first.
