3D Printing Offers New Hair Loss Solution
by April Maguire
In the short time since 3-D printing has become widely available, it has revolutionized a number of different industries. Suddenly, everything from tools and drink coasters, to signage and shelves can all be printed in a matter of minutes. Now, scientists are using this exciting technology to solve one of the most widespread problems in the world: hair loss.
Printing a Fix for Hair Loss
At first glance, the notion of 3-D-printed hair may sound odd. While there are companies that are looking for ways to print fine, hair-like strands on demand, the hair loss solutions currently on the market take a decidedly different approach.
Rather than printing the hairs themselves, companies like Cesare Ragazzi Laboratories print an individualized prosthetic that is worn on the scalp and serves as the base for a hairpiece. Once this base has been made, donor hairs are individually placed around the mold to give full, naturalistic coverage, matching the pattern, texture and color or the individual's existing hair. And the results, according to people who have already benefited from this process, are virtually indistinguishable from real hair.
The Need For Solutions
You could argue that, given the widespread nature of the problem, hair loss is no big deal. After all, the overwhelming majority of both men and women will suffer from thinning or loss at some point in their lives. Although that may be true, a lot of people who suffer from hair loss, especially women, find that the condition greatly diminishes their quality of life.
People with hair loss often suffer from a lack of confidence around others. As a result, they may tend to withdraw from public events, avoiding social gatherings or work functions altogether. Therefore, an easy, surefire solution to hair loss is sorely needed.
The Drawbacks of Traditional Solutions
Unfortunately, traditional solutions to hair loss often prove ineffective. For example, store-bought wigs are typically made from synthetic materials and can look fake. Alternatively, wigs made from real hair can be acquired, but they tend to be rather expensive, and users often complain about headaches resulting from wearing tight wigs all day.
Additionally, while some folks may have luck with topical solutions to hair loss, such as Rogaine, these measures prove ineffective for others. And even when these medications or creams do regrow hair, they have a tendency to stop working out of the blue, or they can be prohibitively expensive to take long-term.
Given these complications, it's no wonder that hair loss sufferers are rejoicing about a new solution. Not only is 3-D printing an alternative to more traditional fixes, but it's also superior in many cases to more invasive (and more expensive) hair transplantation surgery. So if you've been looking for a new way to hide your hair loss, 3-D printing may be the answer.
