Maybe She's Born With It, Maybe It's Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

by Angela Santoriello

The best kept hair growth secret in the world, according to Dr. Jeffrey Rapaport, is Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP).

Exactly as it sounds, platelet-rich plasma is hemoglobin augmented with platelets that include numerous and diverse growth factors that prove to keep hair in place. The New Jersey dermatologist explained the treatment to ABC News.

“What we’re doing is increasing the diameter of the size of the hair follicle. And we’re keeping the hairs that would stop growing in the growing phase,” Rapaport explained to ABC News, noting that with four one-month and two maintenance treatments a year, PRP can restore what Mother Nature has taken away.

At $400 session, PRP costs are approximately $2,400 for the initial round and $800 in annual maintenance. The idyllic candidates who have recently lost their hair will see more success with the treatment, according to the doctor.

“It won’t work for those who are completely bald, and it won’t re-row all the lost hair,” Rapaport said.

HairCellsPlus.com confirms the dermatologist’s claims that PRP is a thriving, non-surgical solution for hair restoration.

“The application of PRP causes miniaturized hair follicles to become healthier and larger, producing more robust hair growth,” the website explained, adding that the process sets in motion adult stem cells that advance quickly and spur local cell growth. “Effective for both male and female pattern hair loss, PRP has also re-grown hair in alopecia area, eyebrow hypotrichosis and other patient cases with non-hereditary hair loss.”

PRP recovery is essentially painless, with patients needing only a mild dose of Ibuprofen for relief from mild swelling that can last up to 48 hours after the treatment. The website added that after a blood sample is retrieved and a local anesthetic is administered, “the PRP are combined and then administered via series of injections over the full scalp or in a localized treatment area such as the eyebrows or beard.”

After continued treatment, patients have claimed a noticeable difference at five to eight months and a slight distinction as early as eight weeks. Tanisha Jimenez called the process “amazing,” reporting definite hair growth around her scalp after having PRP treatments.

A Florida resident told the Women’s Hair Loss Project that she felt the treatments were safe with little discomfort when performed by Dr. Joseph Greco.

“I’m going to continue doing it for quite some time because other than having to take time for travel and a bit of discomfort during the treatment, there are no downsides for me,” she told the Project.
